What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored by your browser or the hard drive of your computer or mobile device if you agree. The cookie allows it to remember information between web pages and browser sessions. Cookies can only store text, which is always anonymous and usually encrypted.

There are two different types of cookies: Session and Persistent. They are used for different things and contain different information.

Session cookies contain information that is used within your current browser session. These cookies are automatically deleted when you close your browser. Nothing is persisted on your machine or device beyond the time your spend on the site.

Persistent cookies are used to hold information that is used between visits. This data allows sites to recognize that you are a returning user and react accordingly. Persistent cookies have a lifetime value that is set by the website, which can vary between a few minutes and several years.

Cookies can have five purposes: strictly necessary (essential for browsing our website or our app), functionality (to remember the choices you’ve made), performance/analytics (to collecting information about how you use our website or our app), targeting/advertising (to collect information about how you browse our website or our app and make advertising more relevant to you); and social media (to share our website or app content on social media).

Further information

For more information on managing cookies, please go  to www.allaboutcookies.org, or, if you’re a resident of the EU, please visit www.youronlinechoices.eu, which has further information about behavioral advertising and online privacy.

Other technologies

In addition to cookies, we use some other similar technologies as follows:

Web Beacons: small graphic images included on our website or emails or those of third parties to provide analytics information;

Social widgets: buttons or icons provided by third-party social media networks which may collect browsing data and will be received by the third party and are controlled by the third party;

SDKs: these are mobile application third-party software development kits used in our apps.  They enable us to collect information about app activity and the device it runs on; and

Local shared objects: these are sometimes called flash cookies and can be stored on your browser.  They are used to maintain preferences and usage records.

Google Analytics

Our websites and apps use the web analytics service Google Analytics that is provided by Google, Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA (“Google”). Google Analytics uses “cookies.” Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer, which allows analyzing how you use the platform. The information generated by the cookie on your use of the platform will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. We have activated the so-called “IP-anonymization,” which means that your IP address will be truncated within the area of the European Union or the European Economic Area before being transferred to the United States. Only in exceptional cases the entire (i.e., non-truncated) IP address will be transferred to a Google server in the US and truncated there. Google will use this information on our behalf for the purpose of evaluating your use of the platform, compiling reports on platform activity, and providing other services relating to platform and internet usage. Google does not provide us with data that we may link back, particularly to you. Your truncated IP address that is transferred to Google will not be associated with any other data held by Google. You may refuse to accept cookies by selecting the relevant settings of your browser. However, please note that if you do so, you may not be able to use the full functionality of the platform. You can also opt-out from being tracked via Google Analytics with effect for the future by downloading and installing Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on under https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Refusing or deleting cookies

Most internet browsers are automatically set up to accept cookies. However, if you want to refuse or delete any cookies (or similar technologies), please refer to the help and support area on your internet browser for instructions on how to block or delete cookies (for example, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari). Please note you may not be able to take advantage of all the features of our websites and apps, including certain personalized features if you delete or refuse cookies.

Mobile opt-out

If you access our Apps, you can enable a “do not track” feature to control interest-based advertising on an iOS or Android mobile device by selecting the ‘Limit Ad Tracking’ option in the privacy section of your Settings on iOS or via advertising preferences on Android devices (e.g., in Google Settings).  This will not prevent the display of advertisements but will mean that they will no longer be personalized to your interests.

Changes to our Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy may be updated from time to time.

If we change anything important about this Cookie Policy, we will provide a prominent link to it on our website for a reasonable length of time following the change.
